We get to choose what to click on, what to pay for, what to listen to.Īpple and U2, for whatever innocent or nefarious reason, forgot that. The only thing we have that’s truly ours in this onslaught of stuff is our choice. ![]() #DISCOGRAPHY U2 FREE#Some of it is free and some of it we pay for, and we have to sort that out for ourselves. We privileged internet and mobile users are bombarded, all day every day, non-stop, with content. What Apple and U2 forgot, though, is that people love the choice to get something for free. The new U2 album is fine ( might want to tap the brakes with that 5-star rating though, Rolling Stone) and most people would be delighted to get it for free. People will always argue about what’s great and not great in music. (Or, if you want to be 2014 about it, their “consumption of media.”) What’s more important is that Apple, in its quest to get people to remember and use iTunes, and U2, in its quest to get every single person on planet earth to listen to their new album, forgot the one hugely important thing that people treasure in their music. I doubt that many people really have that huge a problem with U2 - in terms of massively successful aging rock bands, they aren’t the WORST, you know? This social media outrage is the product of a couple of things, the most important one being that people love to complain on the Internet. What’s more interesting to me is why so many people are upset about it. ![]() There are any number of reasons why U2 gave away its album on iTunes. #DISCOGRAPHY U2 DOWNLOAD#Or, if maleficent tech conspiracy theories are more your speed, you could take it as a sign that Apple is trying to get as many people to download iTunes as possible (the album is free for anyone with iTunes) and thus get in the Apple system, and thus, as Business Insider theorized, give Apple your credit card number and set them up to control the world with their new Apple Pay system. #DISCOGRAPHY U2 FOR FREE#U2 knows everyone is going to get the album for free anyway, so might as well do it on their terms. The fact that U2 can get Apple to distribute its album to everyone who opens iTunes could say a lot of things about The World in 2014 - it just depends what you want it to say.įor example, this whole thing could be a statement about digital media, i.e. In a move that will surely be heralded by some PR person as a dramatic step forward in music distribution, U2’s new album, Songs of Innocence, was automatically downloaded to every phone, tablet and computer that opened up iTunes on Thursday. ![]()
